Hands-down, the most scenic, famed, and historic trail on the island is the Kalalau trail at the very end of the road on the north shore. This is the start of Kauai's crown jewel: Na Pali Coast. A great day hike is an out- and back, four-mile, round -trip to hanakapiai Beach. (Just don't get in the ocean here; some wicked currrent and undertow make it a dangerous swimming beach year-round.) Its not an easy hike. Though, so take your time, pack plenty of water and snacks and head out well before dark. If you plan to hike beyond Hanakapiai, you'll need a permit from the Department of Land and Natural Resources, Division of State Parks. Call 808-274-3444 for details.
